Today I was looking at a new website called www.RememberMe-Gifts.com .   The owner developed this site to bring inspiration and hope to those who have suffered a loss.  As  I was searching the site,  I thought about the loss and grieve that is experienced  when you lose a pet.   I remember when our third Yorkie passed.  The children were distraught but my husband took it the hardest.  Being in the Navy ,John would be gone for months, but when he was home Udale would be his constant companion.  Every time he came home the children had gotten a little older, more independent  and  didn’t need him as much.  But he could  always depend on Udale to jump in his lap and smother him with lots of love and kisses.   For many whose dog or cat are their constant companion losing them  can be devastating.   After time, most will purchase or adopt a new pet.   Others may decide never to own again.  Some may decide to do something special in remembrance of their beloved pet.

My husband chosed to have Udale buried in a special area in our backyard.  Because Udale was so fond of my gardenias, the children planted miniatures and added a old sundial.   With an old bench gracing the side, it has become my husband’s favorite spot.  That’s where he can be found in the late afternoons with a book in hand, a tall glass of ice tea and our  Yorkie  Kiwi in his lap.

With the Christmas Season right around the corner, decorations are going up everywhere. But that pet owner has to keep in mind that brightly wrapped gifts and shiny ornaments can cause you and your pet heartache.
Many accidents occur at this time of year ranging from trees being knocked over, electrical cords being chewed and decorations being eaten. All this could land you and your pet at the vet’s office. Just as you would take the necessary precautions for children please take the same for pooches and kitties.
CSA International a testing and certification organization recommends that you do the following:
- Carefully inspect holiday lighting strings yearly and discard any with frayed cords, cracked holders or loose connections.
- Tethering the Christmas tree to a wall or the ceiling to avoid tipping by a pet or child.
- Place breakable ornaments and electrical decorations up high to help protect both pets and small children.
- Keep chocolate, poinsettias, tinsel, ribbons, and colorful, breakable ornaments that may look like a ball or toy away from pets and children. Ingested string, plastic and wrapping paper can lead to intestinal blockage and require a trip to the veterinarian.
- Never leave candles unattended, pets may burn themselves or cause a fire.
- After the holidays, wrap and store lights and decorations in their packaging, because they likely contain manufacturer’s instructions on replacement bulbs and details for proper product use.

I have a fond memory which involved my toddler son Dante’ and my parents pet Pooh Bear.   Pooh Bear was a blond/tan gorgeous Pekingese.   He had been the center of attention in the family for years until I gave birth to the first grandchild.   I think that Dante’ was probably two or three years old.   He was fascinated with Pooh Bear.   Dante loved to touch his fur and follow Pooh Bear.   Now, Pooh Bear wasn’t too fond of Dante.   He didn’t understand why this toddler was bothering him and taking his spotlight.  Well, Dante’ wanted a pony ride from the doggie.  Dante’ tried to sit on Pooh Bear but he would move and bark at him.   Dante’ wouldn’t give up and Pooh Bear would hide.  Pooh Bear didn’t like it and he was ready for Dante’ to return to Florida.   But eventually Pooh Bear got use to this little boy who stormed into his life.   They had precious moments like playing ball, wrestling and running outside.  Those memories make me happy.   Share your fondest pet memory.
